Ways to Stabilize and Maintain the Lucid Dream

Stabilizing and Maintaining the Lucid Dream

One skill lucid dreamers must develop is to stabilize the dream environment to maintain presence in the lucid dream for longer.  Getting into a lucid dream is half the battle. Many beginner lucid dreamers frequently find themselves being immediately kicked out of a lucid dream no sooner than they've entered one for a few seconds.

The following are a few methods lucid dreamers use stabilize the dream environment in the initial phase of the lucid dream or when the dream starts to collapse.

  1. Rubbing the hands together.  I've found this effective once when I 'woke' up in a dream of pure black space.  Soon after rubbing my hands a dream scene materialized.
  2. Spinning:  This method affects your center of gravity and may connect you more with the dream environment.   Some spin in order to enter a different scene.  The one time I tried to spin I was ejected immediately, so it may not work for everyone.
  3. Senses Engagement:  Quickly try to touch everything you see. If there's food present, take a bite.  Take note of what you smell.  Look at the details of your hands or a pretty rock.
  4. Crawling:  Particularly when the dream feels a little shaky, get down on all fours and crawl!  This puts more of your dream body in contact with the dream.

Whatever you do, try not to think about your 'real' body or your life back at the ranch.   Also make sure to keep your emotions in check.  Sometimes you can't help but be excited once you've achieved lucidity, but too much excitement will send you back home.
